Oracle Java Security Alert

Oracle released Java 6 Update 43 and Java 7 Update 17 on March 4. Oracle strongly advises Java 6 and Java 7 customers to apply the applicable update as soon as possible. See www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/alert-cve-2013-1493-1915081.html for more information. Oracle also announced Java 6 Update 43 would be the last publicly available update for Java 6. Oracle advised Java 6 users to upgrade to Java 7.

Oracle Java SE Critical Patch Update

Oracle released a Java SE Critical Patch Update (i.e. Java 7 Update 15) earlier this week. The update addresses zero-day vulnerabilities (i.e. previously unknown vulnerabilities) in Java browser plug-ins. The updating feature in Java 6 will ask users to download and install Java 7 Update 15. Alternatively, you can download the update from Java.com. Oracle strongly recommends applying the update as soon as possible. Oracle also announced an accelerated Java patch release schedule.

Security Advisory for Adobe Reader and Acrobat

On February 13, 2013, Adobe announced security issues with Adobe Reader and Acrobat. The vulnerabilities can permit an attacker to take control of unprotected computers when users click on PDF files delivered via email. Microsoft is Business Intelligence Platform Leader

Gartner released its February 2013 Magic Quadrant report for Business Intelligence (BI) and Analytics Platforms. In the report, Gartner places Microsoft above Tableau Software in the leader’s quadrant. Departments that use Tableau software can save money by moving to the Microsoft platform through Vanderbilt’s Campus Agreement. Fake Domain Renewal Alerts

The Software Store is receiving reports of spam domain registration renewal alerts. In addition, Network Solutions, Vanderbilt’s primary supplier for domain registrations, renewals, and transfers, sent an alert advising us that Network Solutions customers are receiving fake renewal notifications and/or invoices for DNS services related to their existing domain names. This is a deceptive sales tactic.
