Radiology & Radiological Sciences

Anirban Sengupta, PhD, is interested in the intersection of MRI and fMRI data analysis and machine learning techniques. Currently, he is interested in using resting state fMRI for probing various clinically relevant neuroscience questions in primate models. His PhD research work has involved devising methodology for tumor segmentation and grading in glioma patients using a combination of DCE-MRI and conventional MRI parameters under a machine learning framework.

Dr. Sengupta has done a wide range of research, including the analysis of resting state functional connectivity in monkey brain and spinal cord injury models to investigate changes in their functional circuits. He uses data driven techniques such as ICA for detecting characteristic features from the fMRI signal of brain and spinal cord.

Matthew Smith Wins RSNA Resident Research Award

A research project aimed at developing a new way to image lung perfusion has won a VUMC Radiology member a coveted award. Abdominal Imaging fellow Matthew Smith, MD, PhD, was chosen as this year’s recipient for the RSNA Resident Research Award. Dr. Smith’s research, “Detecting pulmonary embolism using fluoroscopy and spectral analysis: a non-contrast method” started in 2019 when he joined the department as a first-year Diagnostic Radiology resident. He was nominated by the department to recognize his work and efforts towards this research.
