Dr. Eben Rosenthal is a surgeon-scientist and academic leader who brings extensive leadership experience to Vanderbilt. He serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and holds the Barry and Amy Baker Chair in Laryngeal, Head and Neck Research. Prior to coming to Vanderbilt, he was the John and Ann Doerr Medical Director and Associate Director of Clinical Care with Stanford Cancer Center, and before that, the division director of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and the John S. Odess Endowed Chair at the University of Alabama Birmingham.

He specializes in the treatment and reconstruction of head and neck cancer. In the Barry and Amy Baker Laboratory, his research interests involve the use of optical imaging techniques to better detect cancer during surgical procedures, and he has initiated multiple clinical trials in improving cancer surgery and assessing drug delivery. A mentor and frequently invited speaker, Rosenthal has authored or co-authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications.

Eben Rosenthal Receives Secondary Appointment in Radiology

Eben Rosenthal, MD, Professor and Chair for the Department of Otolaryngology, has received a secondary appointment as Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences. Dr. Rosenthal holds many appointments in the university, including the Barry and Amy Baker Chair in Laryngeal, Head and Neck Research, and Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Otolaryngology. He is also a Professor for the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology.

Joanna Shechtel Joins ABMRS Board of Directors

Joanna Shechtel, MD, Assistant Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, has been made a member of the Board of Directors with the American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety (ABMRS). Dr. Shechtel, who serves as the Magnetic Resonance Medical Director (MRMD) for Vanderbilt University Medical Center, joins this not-for-profit corporation whose purpose is to improve the safety of medical and research magnetic resonance (MR) environments.

Melissa Hilmes Published in ‘Diabetes Care’ After Decade-Long Collaboration

Thanks to a decade-long, multi-organization collaboration, a new publication aims to examine how insulin deficiency can impact the size of a pancreas. “Insulin Deficiency From Insulin Gene Mutation Leads to Smaller Pancreas” was recently published in Diabetes Care, and used MRI to measure pancreas volume and shape in a family with an autosomal-dominant insulin gene mutation that results in insulin deficiency similar in severity to that of type 1 diabetes but without autoimmunity.

Lauren Rankin Joins VUMC Radiology as Chief Business Officer

The Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences is happy to share that Lauren Rankin, JD, will be joining as our new Chief Business Officer in April. She will succeed Richard Pierce, MBA, CMPE, who retired in July 2022, and Kate Gibson, CPA, Associate Director, Academic, Research and Professional Enterprise, who has been serving as Interim CBO since Pierce’s departure.

Philip Scherer Named Section Chief of Nuclear Medicine

The Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences is proud to share that Philip Scherer, MD, will be the new Section Chief of Nuclear Medicine, effective March 1. Dr. Scherer succeeds Aaron Jessop, MD, MBA, who will be staying with VUMC Radiology through the end of June. “I am deeply honored by the opportunity,” Dr. Scherer says. “During my time at VUMC, it has been a privilege to work with supportive faculty and staff in the Nuclear Medicine section and Radiology department.”

Congratulations to John Gore, PhD, Director of the Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science, for being named a University Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering, University Distinguished Professor of Physics & Astronomy, & a University Distinguished Professor of Radiology & Radiological Sciences.

Charles Caskey and Li Min Chen Receive R01 Grant for Focused Ultrasound Study

Congratulations to Associate Professor Charles Caskey, PhD, and Professor Li Min Chen, MD, PhD, for being awarded a new R01 Grant for their project "Next generation transcranial ultrasound-based neuromodulation using phase shift nanoemulsions. " This project will develop particles containing drugs that can be released at target locations in the brain for ultrasound as a new way to treat brain disorders.

Alice Hinton Returns to VUMC Radiology as Associate Professor

A familiar face will soon be returning to us here in the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences. Alice Hinton, MD, will be coming out of retirement to serve as an Associate Professor starting in April 2023. Dr. Hinton has held several positions in the department and retired in 2021. She will rejoin us part-time, helping with staffing efforts in our Women’s Imaging section. Dr. Hinton's area of specialty practice is women’s imaging with a focus on breast imaging and obstetrical and gynecologic ultrasound.
