Dr. Kerry Kinney’s lab is dedicated to advancing our understanding of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and its links with both mental and physical health conditions across diverse populations. Using a multi-modal approach, her research focuses on three key areas of study. The first investigates the etiology and classification of GAD, addressing critical debates that affect the diagnostic process and, thus, access to treatment. The second explores social determinants of health, examining how structural inequality may create barriers to accessing quality treatment for individuals from minoritized racial and ethnic backgrounds and those with lower socioeconomic status. The third focuses on enhancing the provision of evidence-based care for GAD and related conditions.
By integrating advanced data analytics, self-report assessments, and psychophysiological methods, Dr. Kinney’s lab strives to provide a thorough understanding of how GAD develops, how to best classify it, and the mechanisms by which it impacts an individual’s mental and physical health. This comprehensive approach helps identify diverse factors that influence the management of GAD, guiding the creation of more accurate diagnostic and treatment tools. Ultimately, the lab’s mission is to ensure that effective diagnostic and therapeutic resources for GAD are accessible to all affected individuals, contributing to greater equity in mental health
treatment.
